Why Can I Not Sleep on GLP-1 Medications?

Why can I not sleep on GLP-1 medications?

Sleep disruption on GLP-1 medications is one of the most commonly reported but least discussed side effects. Patients describe a recognizable pattern: exhausted during the day, unable to fall asleep at night, waking frequently, never feeling rested. This is not psychological. It has a physiological explanation.

The serotonin mechanism

The body produces serotonin from tryptophan, an amino acid obtained through dietary protein. When food intake drops significantly, research confirms caloric intake drops 16 to 39% during GLP-1 treatment, tryptophan availability drops with it. Lower tryptophan means lower serotonin production. Lower serotonin disrupts the ability to fall asleep and maintain deep sleep stages. This is the same mechanism that drives mood changes on GLP-1 medications.

The cortisol mechanism

Rapid weight loss is a physiological stressor. The body responds by elevating cortisol, the primary stress hormone. When cortisol is chronically elevated by the stress of rapid GLP-1 weight loss, its natural daily rhythm flattens. The distinction from fatigue
