A clinical reference for the terms used throughout GLP-1 treatment, supplement science, and nutritional medicine. Each definition is written for patients, not practitioners: plain language with clinical accuracy. Arranged alphabetically.

GLP-1 Glossary: Key Terms Defined

The language around GLP-1 medications and supplementation can be confusing. This glossary defines the clinical and scientific terms used throughout the TAKE GLP-1 Resource Center and on TAKE product pages.

A

Adipose tissue. Body fat. The stored energy deposits throughout the body. GLP-1 medications promote adipose tissue reduction alongside, unfortunately, lean muscle mass reduction.

Amino acids. The building blocks of protein. When dietary protein is insufficient, as it frequently is on a GLP-1 medication due to appetite suppression, the body breaks down muscle tissue to access the amino acids it needs. Essential amino acids cannot be produced by the body and must come from food or supplementation.

Ashwagandha (KSM-66). KSM-66 is a patented, full-spectrum extract of Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) root. It has the largest body of clinical research of any ashwagandha extract, with studies confirming its ability to reduce serum cortisol levels and improve sleep quality. Used in TAKE Rest specifically for the cortisol-elevation mechanism of GLP-1 sleep disruption.

B

B vitamins. A family of eight water-soluble vitamins (B1/thiamine, B2/riboflavin, B3/niacin, B5/pantothenic acid, B6, B7/biotin, B9/folate, B12) that play essential roles in cellular energy production, neurotransmitter synthesis, and DNA repair. All are obtained through food. When food intake drops 16 to 39% on GLP-1 medications, B vitamin status drops with it. Deficiency causes fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, and impaired immune function.

Bioavailability. The proportion of a nutrient or supplement that is absorbed into the bloodstream and available for use by the body. A supplement can contain a nutrient on its label but deliver very little to the body if the form used has low bioavailability. TAKE products use bioavailable forms of vitamins and minerals: for example, methylcobalamin (active B12) rather than cyanocobalamin (synthetic B12).

Biotin. Vitamin B7. Essential for hair follicle health, fatty acid synthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Found in eggs, nuts, and organ meats, foods often reduced during GLP-1 treatment. TAKE Complete provides biotin at 1,000% DV to address the depletion associated with reduced food intake and rapid weight loss.

Body mass index (BMI). A screening measure calculated from height and weight. Ozempic and Wegovy are typically prescribed for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity) or 27 or higher (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition.

C

Caloric restriction. A reduction in total calorie intake below typical maintenance levels. GLP-1 medications produce caloric restriction by suppressing appetite. Research confirms caloric intake drops 16 to 39% during GLP-1 treatment, a level of restriction that creates significant nutritional depletion without targeted supplementation.

CFU (Colony Forming Units). The measurement used for probiotic potency. One CFU represents one viable bacterial cell capable of forming a colony. TAKE Flora contains 40 billion CFU, a clinically relevant dose for microbiome restoration. However, CFU count alone does not determine effectiveness. Delivery system is equally important: most probiotics lose up to 90% of viable cultures before reaching the intestine without an effective delivery mechanism.

Cortisol. The primary stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol follows a natural daily rhythm: high in the morning, declining through the day, lowest at night. Rapid weight loss elevates cortisol as a physiological stress response. Chronically elevated cortisol disrupts sleep architecture, promotes abdominal fat retention, and contributes to anxiety. KSM-66 Ashwagandha in TAKE Rest is specifically studied for cortisol reduction.

Creatine monohydrate. A naturally occurring compound stored in muscle as phosphocreatine. Supplementation at 5,000mg daily saturates muscle phosphocreatine stores, supporting energy production during physical activity and protecting existing muscle from being broken down for fuel during caloric restriction. The International Society of Sports Nutrition identifies creatine monohydrate as the most extensively studied and effective ergogenic nutritional supplement available. Used in TAKE Build at 5,000mg per serving.

D

DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). A potent androgen produced from testosterone. DHT contributes to hair follicle miniaturization and is implicated in androgenetic alopecia. During periods of metabolic stress, including rapid weight loss on GLP-1 medications, DHT-related follicle sensitivity can increase. Saw palmetto in TAKE Regrowth works by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT.

Dysbiosis. An imbalance in the gut microbiome, a state where harmful or opportunistic bacterial species become relatively more dominant over beneficial species. GLP-1 medications promote dysbiosis through slowed gastric emptying (which changes the gut environment) and reduced dietary diversity (which depletes the bacterial populations that depend on specific dietary substrates). Dysbiosis contributes to bloating, gas, constipation, and the gut-brain axis disruptions associated with mood changes on GLP-1 medications.

E

EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor). A protein that stimulates cell growth and differentiation. In the context of hair loss, EGF promotes follicle cell proliferation and helps transition follicles from the resting (telogen) phase back to the growth (anagen) phase. Used in the peptide complex in TAKE Regrowth.

Electrolytes. Minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in fluid. The primary electrolytes in the human body are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate. They govern cellular hydration, nerve signaling, and muscle contractions. Food accounts for approximately 20% of daily electrolyte intake. When food intake drops 30 to 50% on GLP-1 medications, electrolyte levels drop with it. Symptoms of electrolyte depletion include muscle cramps, brain fog, headaches, fatigue, and decreased exercise tolerance.

G

Gastric emptying. The rate at which food moves from the stomach into the small intestine. GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying by design. This is one of the primary mechanisms by which they extend feelings of fullness and reduce appetite. Slower gastric emptying is also the direct cause of nausea, constipation, and gut microbiome disruption on GLP-1 medications.

GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide). A gut hormone involved in insulin secretion and energy metabolism. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which is why it produces greater average weight loss than semaglutide alone, approximately 20 to 22% versus 15%.

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1). A hormone produced naturally in the gut after eating that stimulates insulin secretion, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. GLP-1 receptor agonist medications (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound) mimic this hormone at pharmacological doses, producing significant and sustained appetite suppression and weight loss.

GLP-1 receptor agonist. A drug that binds to and activates GLP-1 receptors, mimicking the effects of natural GLP-1. The GLP-1 receptor agonist class includes semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda), and others.

Gut microbiome. The ecosystem of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms living in the digestive tract. The gut microbiome governs digestion, immune function, vitamin production, and increasingly, mood and neurological health through the gut-brain axis. GLP-1 medications disrupt the gut microbiome through slowed gastric emptying and reduced dietary diversity.

I

IGF-1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1). A hormone that plays a role in cell growth and repair. In hair follicle biology, IGF-1 promotes the anagen (growth) phase and supports follicle survival. Used in the peptide complex in TAKE Regrowth alongside EGF, bFGF, KGF, and VEGF.

M

MAKTREK Bi-Pass Technology. A patented marine polysaccharide complex delivery system used in TAKE Flora. It forms a protective layer around probiotic cultures that resists stomach acid, allowing a significantly higher proportion of viable bacteria to reach the intestine where they are needed. Standard probiotic capsules lose up to 90% of viable cultures in stomach acid before reaching the intestine.

MCT oil (Medium-Chain Triglycerides). A form of saturated fat that is metabolized differently from long-chain fatty acids, absorbed directly in the liver and converted rapidly to energy rather than stored as fat. Used in TAKE Nourish as a readily available energy source that supports satiety without requiring extensive digestion, important for patients with suppressed appetite and slower gastric transit.

Melatonin. A hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Production is triggered by darkness and suppressed by light. GLP-1 medications disrupt sleep onset through tryptophan depletion (reducing serotonin, the precursor to melatonin) and cortisol elevation. TAKE Rest provides melatonin at 5mg per capsule and 10mg per two-capsule serving to support sleep cycle regulation.

Micronutrients. Vitamins and minerals required in small amounts for normal physiological function. Distinguished from macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat) which are required in larger amounts. GLP-1 medications deplete micronutrients indirectly through reduced food intake. Every vitamin and mineral obtained through food drops proportionally when caloric intake drops 16 to 39%.

P

Phosphocreatine. The storage form of creatine in muscle tissue. During high-intensity activity, phosphocreatine is broken down to rapidly regenerate ATP (cellular energy). Creatine supplementation at 5,000mg daily saturates muscle phosphocreatine stores, supporting energy production and protecting muscle protein from being broken down for fuel during caloric restriction.

Prebiotics. Non-digestible dietary fibers that selectively feed beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Distinguished from probiotics (live bacterial cultures). TAKE Flora contains both prebiotic fiber and probiotic cultures. The prebiotics feed the introduced probiotic bacteria and support existing beneficial populations.

Probiotics. Live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. In the context of GLP-1 treatment, probiotics help restore the gut microbiome balance disrupted by slowed gastric emptying and reduced dietary diversity. Effectiveness depends on both the strains used and the delivery system protecting them through stomach acid.

Psyllium husk. A soluble fiber derived from the seeds of Plantago ovata. It absorbs water and forms a gel in the intestine, adding bulk and moisture to stool and supporting regular bowel transit. Psyllium husk is one of the most evidence-backed fiber interventions for constipation and is compatible with long-term daily use. Used in TAKE Flow to address GLP-1-related constipation and reduced dietary fiber from lower food intake.

R

Resting metabolic rate (RMR). The number of calories the body burns at rest to maintain basic physiological functions. Muscle mass is the primary driver of resting metabolic rate. More muscle means more calories burned at rest. When GLP-1 treatment results in significant lean mass loss (up to 40% of total weight lost), RMR decreases proportionally, making continued weight loss harder and increasing the risk of weight regain after stopping medication.

S

Saw palmetto. A plant extract from Serenoa repens. It works primarily by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Reduced DHT slows follicle miniaturization and hair loss associated with androgenetic factors. Used in TAKE Regrowth alongside the peptide complex and rosemary extract.

Semaglutide. The active ingredient in Ozempic (approved for type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (approved for chronic weight management). A GLP-1 receptor agonist that suppresses appetite, slows gastric emptying, and improves blood glucose regulation. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks at the Wegovy dose of 2.4mg weekly.

Serotonin. A neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, and cognitive function. Produced from tryptophan, an amino acid obtained through dietary protein. When food intake drops significantly on GLP-1 medications, tryptophan availability drops, reducing serotonin production. Lower serotonin disrupts sleep onset (serotonin is the precursor to melatonin), mood regulation, and appetite signaling. 5-HTP in TAKE Rest directly supports serotonin production by bypassing the dietary tryptophan pathway.

T

Telogen effluvium. A form of temporary, diffuse hair loss caused by a significant physiological stressor that pushes hair follicles prematurely into the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle. The stressor, in the case of GLP-1 treatment, rapid weight loss and nutritional deficit, occurs two to four months before shedding begins, which is why many patients do not immediately connect their hair loss to their medication. Generally reversible with appropriate nutritional support and topical treatment.

Tirzepatide. The active ingredient in Mounjaro (approved for type 2 diabetes) and Zepbound (approved for chronic weight management). A dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that activates two hormone pathways rather than one. The SURMOUNT-1 trial showed average weight loss of 22.5% at the 15mg dose over 72 weeks, the largest pharmacological weight loss result recorded at time of publication.

Tryptophan. An essential amino acid and the dietary precursor to serotonin. Found in protein-rich foods including poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, and legumes. When food intake drops significantly on GLP-1 medications, tryptophan availability drops, reducing serotonin synthesis. This is one of the primary mechanisms behind GLP-1-related sleep disruption and mood changes.

V

VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor). A protein that promotes new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). In the context of hair loss, VEGF supports the blood supply to hair follicles, promoting follicle survival and the transition back to the anagen (growth) phase. Used in the peptide complex in TAKE Regrowth.

YESTEIN fermented yeast protein. The protein source used in TAKE Nourish. A protein derived from fermented yeast, providing all nine essential amino acids in a highly bioavailable form. Fermentation improves digestibility and amino acid absorption compared to standard plant protein sources, making it particularly suitable for GLP-1 patients with slower gastric transit and reduced digestive capacity.
